Photo of Do Not Cross sign on Ortigas Avenue
Bawal tumawid. May namatay na dito. A “Do Not Cross” sign in Tagalog, on Ortigas Avenue, Metro Manila, Philippines

MMDA sign reads: “Bawal tumawid. May namatay na dito.”

Translation: “Do not cross. Someone died here already.”

I like this.

Used to be that warning signs like this would say, “Bawal tumawid. Nakamamatay,” which translates to, “Do not cross. It’s deadly.”

Perhaps this new wording will be the tipping point that makes people take the warning sign seriously. 😉

This photo was taken from inside a vehicle while stopped along Ortigas Avenue, approaching the intersection of EDSA, from Manila.

Oh yeah, that vehicle behind the sign with a blue roof is the unflappable Philippine jeep or jeepney. If the Philippines had to name a National Public Mode of Transportation, the jeepney would probably be it! 😀
