ZipRider at Icy Strait Point, Hoonah, Alaska

Post-shutter processing: just a tad of Color Pop on some photos

ZipRider at Icy Strait Point is the world’s longest and highest zipline (as of this writing) at 5,495 feet long and 1,320 feet high, with 6 cables side by side, an average grade of 25% and top speed of about 65 mph; it takes approximately 90 seconds to get to the bottom. That depends how heavy or how light you are, of course.

I was on cable #1, as you can probably guess by the following photo.

The first third of the ride was spent going down sideways and holding on to my hat with both hands.

They did warn us about the speed, and I did remove my eyeglasses, but I decided to go down with my hat on. Anyway, I thought, I could always get another hat if I lose it. Silly me. But it made for a nice picture at the end. 😉

Then the ride got better and I finally got one hand on my D80 and started snapping away. The following photos were taken without me looking through the viewfinder.

It was literally “point-and-shoot” and, with no free hand to change camera settings or to zoom in and out, “I-hope-I-get-some-decent-photos-out-of-this”.

I didn’t want the camera in front of my face. I certainly didn’t want to miss the view!

So here we go.

Down, down, down.

That’s Celebrity Infinity down there.

Still going down… Still with one hand on my hat…

And down… I’ve decided not to lose my hat…

Ugh.

Blurred shot.

Nice greenery though.

Hey, I can see the end. Must take forward shots the rest of the way down…

At this speed…

I am getting really close.

Really.

Close.

Uh-oh…

Um… help?

Then, finally, I hit the coils.

Toink!!!

And that was the last shot I took on my way down. Those are my white rubber shoes at the bottom of the frame. My feet went up when my ride went “toink!” 😀

And because you patiently made the trip down with me, here’s a little video treat.

I don’t normally share videos, but this I think you must see… Icy Strait Point ZipRider – World’s Largest Zipline (as of 2011).

And right below is proof that The Cruising Shutterbug did the ZipRider.

Did I already tell you that I had one hand on my hat and one hand on my D80?

Note to self: When back in Icy Strait Point, must do ZipRider again! 😀
